As compared to the step index fiber, Step index fiber is a fiber in which the core is of a uniform refractive index and there is a sharp decrease in the index of refraction at the cladding. As compared to the SI fiber GI fibers can transmit a large amount of information and the distortion is comparatively small than step index fiber. However, these fibers possess low light coupling efficiency and are more costly to produce than SI Fibers.

When routing laser energy though laser fiber, make sure the delivery fiber does not exceed its minimum bend radius (usually around 6 inches, or 150mm) because bending a fiber beyond this limit may overstress the fiber, leading to potential power losses or in the worst case, a broken fiber.

It is rare for a fiber to fail, but it is nonetheless serious when such a situation occur. The potential can be prevented by equipping the system with fiber breakage detection, which can sense when the fiber has been damaged. The more advanced detection systems test the fiber prior to firing of the laser. Best working practice is to route the fiber above ground, not touching the floor between the laser and workstation to avoid the possibility of crushing the fiber, then coil and hang excess fiber length at the workstation. If the focus head will be moving in the case of a robotic arm, give sufficient slack, and again make sure the fiber’s connection to the focus head avoids exceeding the minimum bend radius.

Most system integrators will usually provide the correct space within the workstation, but it is important to note that cable management from the workstation to the laser is the responsibility of the end user. It is also worth noting that increasing the length of the fiber does not result in a significant decrease in delivered power as the delivery of the laser through the fiber is very efficient. The main power losses occur at the fiber’s entry and exit from the laser. It is important to keep the entry and exit point clean,  free from debries, dust, oil and solvants.

Cleaning Optics

There are a variety of cleaning products and cleaning methods to use depending upon the type of optic to be cleaned and the nature of the care needed, ranging from removing dust to smudges on the surface. An important point to note is that you should never clean plastic optics or optics in plastic housings with Acetone because it will melt and damage the plastic. Therefore, if you have a plastic optic, then you should use Compressed Air. After purchasing an optical component, exercising proper care can maintain its quality and extend its usuable lifetime. The technician handling the optics should also be trained in optic maintenance and care.

Handling Tips when cleaning optics

  1. Always wear gloves or finger cots when cleaning optics. The oil and dirt on your fingertips can sometimes damage the coating on optics. If a fingerprint is left on an optical surface for a long time, it can become a permanent stain and damage the optical coating of the lens.
  2. Always handle optics by the edges. Never touch the optical surface with your fingertips, even while wearing gloves as it can cause micro scratches on the lens surface or coating.
  3. Never handle optics with metal tools. Reduce the chance of damage by using wooden, bamboo, or plastic tools to handle optics. Vacuum pens are handy for small optics.
  4. Always place an optic on a clean soft surface, especially if the optical surface is convex. Resting on a hard or dirty tabletop can cause scratches on the optical surface and coating.
  5. To store optics, wrap them individually in clean, lint-free lens tissue and place in a low humidity environment. Never store unwrapped optics together in a box or bag, as contact and constant rubbing and friction between the optics will cause scratches and damage. Do not store optics with heavier items on top of them.
  6. Never blow on the optic. It is recommended to use a air puff when removing dirt from the optics. Do not chew gum or talk while holding laser optics to prevent saliva contamination. Saliva particles will often stain the surface and it is very difficult to clean or remove.

The most important application area of Alexandrite lasers is dermatology. For example, such lasers are used for hair removal, for removing tattoos and for treating visible leg veins and pigmented lesions. In the case of hair removal, the light from a long-pulse laser is preferentially absorbed at the hair shafts, and the resulting heat damages these hair shafts and the surrounding hair follicles (selective photothermolysis). By cooling the skin during the treatment, damage to the epidermis is minimized. The short emission wavelength of an Alexandrite laser, compared with that of a Nd:YAG laser, is beneficial for removing finer hairs, but increases the risk of skin damage in case of darker skin. (The absorption occurs mostly in melanin, which occurs in hair but also in dark skin, and less in hemoglobin.)

Alexandrite Laser Crystal repair

The most common types of coatings are anti-reflection (AR) and high-reflective (mirror) coatings for 755nm lasers Alexandrite laser crystals.  The optical coating is generally the limiting factor in the performance ability of a high-power laser system.  Regardless of the type of damage, coating failure irrevocably and adversely affects the transmitted wavefront. This can have a drastic effect on system performance, but can also be costly when the time comes to replace the damaged Alexandrite laser crystal.  It is important that the laser technician identify the damaged Alexandrite crystal and replace them with new rod to ensure that the machine is at optimal performance. We recommend that the user purchase back up Alexandrite crystal rod so that they can send the damaged one for repair during servicing and replacement.

Laser Flash Lamp or Gas discharge laser lamps are routinely used as optical pump sources for solid state lasers. The two main categories of laser pump lamps are DC arc lamps for continuous pumping, and laser flash lamps for pulsed pumping. Both offer high brightness, high power capability, long operating life, and low cost per hour of operation.

Green Optical Laser Cable repair

Damaged green optical laser cable for repair after laser damage. This picture shows a green optical laser cable from Miyachi laser Japan. One side of the connector has laser burnt marks due to off focus laser beam and the other side require re-termination and clean up. The laser cable is sent to our factory to be checked, cleaned, terminated and polished. It is common for connectors to be damaged after prolong usage  and it is important that regular maintenance procedure to be in place to protect your laser fiber from damage. However, due to wear and tear, it is common for optical laser cable to be damaged after more than 1 year of usage. If the usage level is high, some of the laser fiber may need to be serviced every 9-15 months.

Customers can send in their cables for evaluation on whether it is suitable for repair. Sometimes, we receive green fiber cable for repair that is broken in the middle. Dirt or dust on the end surfaces of an optical fiber can damage the fiber. The damaged surfaces of the fibers can also cause contamination to adjacent lenses. To prevent contamination, do not remove the protective cap from the ends of the optical fiber until you are ready to set up the machine.
