Diamond Ice lathe tool | Jewellery News Asia

Jewellery News Asia Gold Technic Ice Lathe Tool Feature

Jewellery news asia Gold Technic Ice Lathe Tool Feature Dec 2016

Our new customised ice lathe tool is featured on Jewellery News Asia. Aisa’s leading magazine for the jewellery and gem industry.

Ice_Lathe_Tool_Gold_Technic

Our latest product is the custom made ice lathe diamond tool. The ice lathe diamond tool is used in precision cutting of gold chain on the fully automatic multi tool CNC ice lathe. The gold chain is embedded in ice, frozen and positioned onto a spinning drum. As the drum spins, the diamond tool will cut the gold chain leaving behind a very shiny surface. In this method of production, it is crucial that the diamond tool is sharp and precision made to process multiple chain in a single icing session. Each tool is fitted on a multi tool tool head and tools can be changed automatically according to the pre-set program. Up to three diamond tools work simultaneously, removing three times as much material per pass, and there is no downtime due to empty passes.

The consistency of our diamond tools is crucial application on multi tool CNC machine as it reduces machine downtime due to tool failure and variation in tool length and size. All our tool shanks are cnc machined to ensure that tolerance is kept to a minimum of +/-0.01mm.

The quality of the diamond used will affect the lifespan on the lathe tool, therefore, we assure customers that only the best stones are selected to construct the ice lathe tool.

ST600F Laser Fiber repair with D-80LKA type connector

Laser fiber ST600F damaged

ST600F Laser fibre (damaged)

We receive damage ST600F laser fiber in all types of condition. The above laser delivery fiber is a 600 micron laser fiber (ST600) from a high-power Nd:YAG welding machine.  A contaminated laser delivery fiber can cause the connectors to heat up and eventually burn out.

If not replaced in time, it may also affect the focusing head as the fumes from the burn out may also contaminate the lenses inside the focusing head. Therefore it is important to remove and replace the damage laser delivery fiber once it is identified.

Stages of Assessment ST600F Laser fiber

At the assessment stage, we can see that the 600 micron laser fiber (ST600F) is contaminated with grease and dirt on the edge of the connector and the surface of the fiber core.  There is also a laser burn mark at the edge of the connector and a damaged blurred laser core. There is a lot of contaminants on the sapphire connector surface. We will also check for any visible breakage alongside the laser fiber and make indications before we send the fiber to the servicing department for repair.

At the servicing stage, we terminate the fiber and repolish to restore its original surface. Terminated fiber ends are highly polished for low insertion loss. Aside from reflection losses at each end of the laser delivery fiber, a 3-meter length of cable can transmit 99 % of the laser beam power.

The connector will also be repaired and damaged parts replaced. Gold Technic uses industry standard D-80LKA connectors for quick and easy coupling and decoupling from the focusing heads and laser machine.

After repair the raw fibers are inserted back into a multi-layer protective sheathing
surrounded by a reinforced monocoil jacket that provides both flexibility and tensile support.

Before delivery, we will ensure that all laser fiber are tested and in working order.

Designing precision diamond cutting tools for CNC machining

Diamond cut gold ball chain on CNC diamond cut machine

Precision cut gold ball chain by CNC diamond tool cutting machine

Precision diamond cutting tool Research and Developemnt

Precision diamond cutting tool can be used to cut metals such as gold, silver, copper and brass. In jewellery manufacturing, gold and silver are most commonly used. It is important to fine tune diamond tools when working on CNC cutting machine to reduce machine downtime and wear and tear of the tools. Maintenance Policy and Procedures of CNC machines and precision diamond tools are also very important in prolonging lifespan of diamond tools. We will elaborate more on recommendations on maintenance policies in our next contribution.

We help our customer troubleshoot to get the perfect precision diamond cut on the ball chain machine. The above picture shows row of ball chain that was cut by a precision diamond cutting tool that failed the cutting test on the first trial run because it cannot produce the perfect crescent/ moon cut on the ball chain. The moon cut was too small and cannot cover the whole surface of the ball. That has resulted in a dull and unfinished ball.

Surface finish on a ball chain can be compared to reflective qualities of diamond when cut in different shape. For example Round brilliant cut, Marquise cut, Oval cut and Princess cut. In this case, it is widely known in the market that the Round brilliant cut brings out the most shine in a diamond. Similarly, with our experience in producing diamond tools, we can recommend the ideal profile to produce the best cut on ball chains.

Precision diamond cutting tool Diagnosis

After our study of the initial problem, the production team redesign the tool and test on the balls again. Finally we could achieve the perfect cut. We complete the development process in about 6-8 weeks and customer was very satisfied with the performance. This shows how important it is to engage the right company to propose the best solutions for all your diamond cutting needs.

Do give us a call or email us for more solutions on precision diamond cutting tools. We will be updating our blog periodically.

Advantages of laser welding vs traditional torch soldering

Laser weld samples

Advantages of laser welding

There are many advantages of using laser welder in jewellery repair as compared to traditional torch soldering.

Soldering is a capillary fill system where solder is heated with a gas-oxygen torch or open flame.  The solder then flows across and fill up the gap.  The heat used for this process is very high, and often results in a visible dark seam or discoloration in the solder area. When soldering with a torch, the heat is applied to a relatively large area resulting in heat transfer. If the user is not careful, he can burn or destroy heat sensitive stones and other heat sensitive materials that are in close proximity to the flame.

Laser stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Laser welding is a non-contact process in which light energy is used to weld the precious metals to themselves. The heat used in the laser welding process very localized. After welding, it results in a seamless, undetectable work zone that is not discolored in any way.

During the laser welding process, the metal adjacent to the welding point does not melt.  This precision heat source allows the user to laser weld metal in close proximity of heat sensitive stones and without affecting the stone or material.  Because of this focused heat source, the laser weld will not anneal springs or clips eliminating the need to replace damaged findings.

When using a laser welder, the beam is so concentrated, it burns away any impurities during the laser welding process, thus eliminating the need for prior cleaning or coating. Laser welding can be performed on dirty or even tarnished surfaces without leaving discoloration or dark markings.

Tips when using your laser optical fiber

Laser optical fibers

Laser optical fibers – Gold Technic

Proper Laser optical fiber alignment for your laser machine ensures optimum performance. It is important not to bend the fiber beyond the minimum bending radius and keep the focusing head clean, free from oil and dirt. Poor fiber handling can cause damage to the laser fiber and the fiber head to burn out. So it is important that the technicians are well informed about the laser operations before operating the machines.

Best working practice is to route the fiber above ground, not touching the floor between the laser and workstation to avoid the possibility of crushing the fiber, then coil and hang excess fiber length at the workstation. Coiling the fiber above ground can also avoid accidental tripping and prevents dirt getting trapped on the outer fiber sheathing.

If the laser focus head will be moving, give sufficient slack, and again make sure the fiber’s connection to the focus head avoids exceeding the minimum bend radius.
